Chess Word Problem
CHESS WORD PROBLEM
Six students were in a chess tournament in which
each played each of the others once.
A player got 2 points for a win,
1 point for a draw, and
0 points if they lost.
Here are the final points received after all the matches:
Adam - 4, Bert - 7, Conrad - 9, Dora - 5, Ernie - 1, Fred - ???
How many points did Fred get?
***STOP HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO SEE THE SOLUTION***
THE SOLUTION IS :
******************SOLUTION*******************
There were 15 games played.
6 choose 2 results in 15 games.
Each type of game will result in 2 points awarded:
- 2 for winner AND 0 for loser or
- 1 point for each player in tie games.
Thus the final scores must total 30 points.
Since the five known point values total 26,
Fred had 4 points.
In fact, since 4 people had an ODD number of points,
there must have been at least 4 games that ended in a tie!
FRED HAD 4 points

Math CONSTANTS
(GOLDEN SECTION)
is a rectangular shape that is appealing to the eye.
The Cincinnatiis Enquirer will be using this feature soon.
An article appeared in the paper on Sunday,July 22, 2012
announcing a change in the size of the paper:
Enquirer's new format is innovation with purpose
The most obvious change to the print edition of The Enquirer will be the new page size: 10½ inches wide by 14 and 2/3 inches tall. The Enquirer will be one of the first papers in the country
to change to this size, and people have told us they love it.
The new print edition fits easily on the breakfast table along with readers’ cereal bowls and coffee cups, and can be tucked
in their briefcase or bag and carried with them if they
don’t finish reading. The pages will be organized with fewer
jumps so you don’t have to turn pages ...
When you divide 14 and 2/3 by 10 and 1/2 you :
get
closer to the GOLDEN RATIO?
The original paper was 23 inches by 10.25 inches

How about a deck of cards?
Are the dimensions close to the GOLDEN RATIO?
The cards that I measured were 2.25 inches by 3 and 7/16

Polynomial & Fractional Inequalities
1) Get all variables onto
ONE SIDE of the INEQUALITY SIGN.
Thus, the problem is now in a form
with ZERO on ONE SIDE.
2) FACTOR the algebraic expression.
3) IGNORE the INEQUALITY SIGN
and WORK with as if it was
just EQUAL TO ZERO.
SOLVE! (Set each FACTOR = 0)
4) MARK the solutions to STEP #3
onto a number line.
5) Choose a VALUE for "X"
from each REGION on the number
line that was formed in STEP #4.
6) PLUG each value from STEP #5
into the expression to find the
Positive OR Negativeness of
each region.
7) The decisions made in STEP #6
will determine the final answer
as we refer back to the
original INEQUALITY SIGN.

Fractional INEQUALITIES:
When the INEQUALITY involves a FRACTION,
the method for solving is almost identical to
the POLYNOMIAL type. There are just two things
to take NOTE of... (Between STEP #3 and STEP #4)
3A) A Fraction will EQUAL ZERO
when the TOP "NUMERATOR" is ZERO.
when the TOP "NUMERATOR" is ZERO.
These values need to be marked on the number line.
3B) When the BOTTOM equals ZERO
the FRACTION is UNDEFINED.
(The values of X that make the
the FRACTION is UNDEFINED.
(The values of X that make the
BOTTOM "DENOMINATOR" equal ZERO are
UNUSABLE values for X. These values need
to be marked on the number line.)

142857 ... A MAGIC NUMBER?
Add 142857 to itself.
Look at closely at the individual numbers in the sum.
Now add the original number to this sum,
and again to each subsequent sum,
noting each time the arrangement
or pattern in each string of numbers.
When you add 142857 the seventh time,
something so mind-blowing will happen that ...
(I take not credit in this "Mathematical Beauty".
This is taken from "The St. Anthony Messenger".)

AP Calculus Part AB
1) You only need to get about 1/2 the questions
correct to pass with a "3".
2) With "Multiple Choice Questions", try to
eliminate one or more options and then
you can guess from the others. In guessing,
pick the one that looks the most like the
whole group of options.
3) With the "Show your Work Questions",
you must LABEL all graphs and number
lines that you use ( f or f ' or f " ).
Each question is worth 9 points.
4) If you use the Graphing Calculator to
find the Area, then be sure to write down
the DEFINITE INTEGRAL on the paper.
